TR-5 Receiver

Function

The Receiver is a complement to the collars. It receives signals at a specific frequency from the collar worn by the jaguar. The receiver converts the electromagnetic signal of the transmitter into an acoustic digital signal that is used to identify the direction of the signal to which the animal carrying the transmitter is heading. It should always be connected to a fixed or portable antenna, depending on the needs of the study.

Camera Trap.

Function

These are part of a day-and-night photo video-recording or capture system. The difference with common cameras is that camera traps can withstand different weather conditions and can remain hidden in different areas such as trees, bushes or cattle hedges. For the Jaguar Program, specifically, they are used for monitoring wildlife in national parks, private farms or cattle ranches.

These cameras are necessary, since it is impossible to seat and wait with a conventional camera, in addition to the fact that mammals (especially jaguars) are elusive and difficult to observe.

These cameras use 4 to 6 pairs of AA batteries, which should be replaced approximately after 30-40 days of normal use. They have a motion sensor that detects when an animal enters the detection zone, and it can activate the camera with a reaction time of up to 1 second.

Collar radio

Function

The animals are fitted with these collars in order to determine their location. There are several types, such as collars that indicate the GPS coordinates via satellite, or VHF collars that require field follow-up for determining their location.

Collars neither interfere with the behavior of jaguars nor cause them any damage. The UNA Jaguar Program has two specimens wearing the collar, and, aided by some camera traps, jaguars have been observed while feeding without any problems.
